My name is Edward Li and I’m in my fourth (and hopefully final) year of Communication Studies at Carleton University. The course looks to be a grand departure from the usual and already I’m trying to complete perhaps my most challenging ‘assignment’ yet — writing about myself!
Well, other than writing the occassional ‘scholarly’ essay, I’m quite embarrassed to say that most of my writing has been relegated to commenting on various internet forums. (Though it might be a stretch for that to be considered as ‘writing’ — The latter, that is.) When I was younger, I had dreams of becoming a science fiction writer, but many years and abandoned projects later, I discovered I didn’t quite have the aptitude or creativity to really write anything decent.
In the current time, and during the final stretch of my university ‘career’, I do not possess any high or particularly noble aspirations of what I want to do in the future (unlike in my childhood). However, I do find myself drawn to more technical work (e.g. video editing and so on, and even working in SPSS), criticizing today’s TV shows (the sitcoms and reality shows mostly) and playing computer games, so there’s a possibility that I might fit right in making videos on YouTube that’ll never be watched.
Perhaps improving my writing through this class might help to motivate me to do something. Hopefully, before the term ends, I’ll have a better idea of what I want to do after I get out of school. We shall see!
